I have a 2001 Mounty AWD with a 5.0 with 68,000 Miles. Was cruzing down the highway bout 75mph when the engine just died. Tries to start but will not at all, just a slight cough and chug. Has a fairly new fuel pump and filter. I have no codes because of how fast this happened, there was no warning at all. Any one have any possible ideas? Timing chain/belt maybe? Never had this happen so I am pretty much clueless. Please help if you can, all input appreciated. Thanks.

check for spark, listen for the fuel pump hum.

that's the basics; spark, fuel, compression

my vote is timing

I hear the pump hum. New plugs, I have spark. No way to really check the timing is there, I do have a timing gun.

Check the fuel pressure...

Somehow I can't think the timing chain just went on an engine with only 68k miles...Just turn the key on and check the fuel pressure at the schrader valve...

Bet the pressure is not at normal specs... 65-72 psi...

coulda been defective chain and keep in mind it is 9 years old too

wheres the schrader valve, what do i need to check it. Is it a timing chain or belt on the 5.0?

It's a timing chain,it would be rare for a 5.0 to throw a chain like that. Also if the chain was the problem when you cranked it over it would sound different because the valve timing would be all messed up.

I am betting fuel if you are sure you have spark.:D

do a spark test. remove a plug but ground the body making sure it cant spark near anything damageable and have a buddy turn the key

I think they also make a meter or light that you can put inline with the spark wire which is a bit safer

There's a spark checker you can get that looks like a spark plug with no center electrode and a ground clip.If it will jump that it will run the truck.

Like they said, check the basics first before you throw a bunch of money and parts at it.You will need a fuel pressure gauge and the valve should be on the fuel rail.Sorry,I'm laid up or I would go take a photo of mine but someone will come and explain where it is.:D

ok, I have sparl and I am gettin plenty of fuel. I am totally stumpped. maybe a computer of sensor issue?
