5.0L V8 does not want to start - backfires

I've done some more research, and 30-40 is normal for a Return Style Fuel System.
 






It is unlikely that a backfire issue which is a result of "unused fuel" is caused by fuel delivery unless you have leaky injectors which could probably be "tested" by a "pressure run down" once the vehicle is turned off. It is more likely a timing / mechanical issue.
 


















I hope it's not the timing chain....

I am going to Reno for Hot August Nights ( not taking my Explorer)

If I have to replace the chain, I will get a new cam while I'm in there...and if I have to replace the cam, I might as well put on the intake I want to as well...and if I'm pulling the intake...only a few more bolts and the heads are off too...I would want to upgrade those too

That is EASILY $2500, and I would rather save that money for use in Reno, and do it all when I get back...
