I read all the post about building a bulit proof a4ld. and all the talk about how the 5R tranny is stronger why cant you bolt 5r to a pushrod 4.0 and make it work? Wouldn't it be cheaper then putting life back in to a a4ld?

The 5R55E transmission is electronic, and requires a computer to control it. Check the thread on swapping a 5R55S with a separate controller. It's in the transmission section along with the Project Frankentranny thread.

Yes, what Brooklyn said. You can bolt a 5R55E to a pushrod 4.0 (that's what I have) but the 1st Gen doesn't have the computer to make it shift. If you can transplant the engine, transmission, PCM and all the related harnesses, then you are a Ford EEC wizard and master fabricator and you don't need our assistance. :p:

What year did they start using the 5R55E?

Yeah....but WHO would do that?.....

.....Oh yeah....I would.....I did.

Does that make me a EEC wizard and master fabricator?.....

Possibly...Where did you locate the PCM? Under the hood like the 2ndGen or in the kick panel like the 1stGen?

I put it in the Engine Bay, like the 2nd Gen...

I have also transplanted a 5r55e with the 4.0 sohc into a first gen, with the harness. PCM is now located in the engine compartment as well.
