Hey all, this is the best website I have ever seen. You guys do a great job. I have an o1 ranger with all the shift flare problems that have been mentioned. The dealer tried to work on it and never even came close. Thanks to your website I feel good about fixing it myself now. But I have a big question: What's the difference between the 5r44e (what i have) and the 5r55e (which is what seems so common on here.) Where can I get the ATSC manual for the 5R44E?

Welcome to this forum! The 5R44E is used on the 3.0L engine while the 5R55E is used on the 4.0L engine. Check WWW.TransmissionPartsUSA.Com or EBay for the ATSG manuals. You could find the Ford 3 ring binders on EBay. You could also download a Ford CD or DVD from WWW.FordCDs.Com.

The only difference between the 5R44 and 5R55 is the 55 handles 550 ft lbs or torque and the 5R44 440 ft lbs. How and why is insignificant for your purposes. Whatever you read about 5R55E applies equally to your 5R44E, including the VB rebuild diary here.

5R55E Trans.

Also new to forum and thanks to all for the great information. Question re 5R55E trans I have in 02 Explorer Sport, do all these trans require adaptor to remove / replace fluid. I have a dipstick on mine and production date is early in 02...Feb. I believe. Took it to my mechanic this morning to do job and he says need adapter and vaccum tool. Thought I read that if trans has dipstick should be able to replace fluid by just dropping pan, etc.
Appreciate all help and info guys.

2000 Ranger 3.0, Transmission not working in reverse

Hi, Everyone
Could you guys give me some advice? I'm not sure how to proceed...
(I'm a tradesman but not an Auto Mechanic)
I let my sister drive my Ranger ( 2000 Ranger 3.0 4x2 V6, Xcab, Flex Fuel) 3 miles on Wed night and park it. When I when to start it I had no reverse (and still don't).
Other than having NO reverse the truck is shifting and running good.
First, Ive been trying to properly ID which transmission this is. According to Motorcraft .com (through VIN# 1FTYR14V9YTA18656) this is a 5R55E tranny but Ive seen some conflicting info on this thread... I would appreciate some feedback on that, (Identification).
Second, I've researched this and a "Blownout valvebody gasket at the reverse servo" may be causing this....Does the tranny have to be removed to check the reverse servo?

I would appreciate all advice from all pros on this forum...
If it turns out I do need a tranny replacement should I have a shop rebuild this one or should I get one rebuilt from Ford? I was told this is afairly easy Transmission to replace.

I reside in Brooklyn, NY so Brooklyn Bay I would appreciate it if you could advise me on a competant, HONEST Local mechanic/ Transmission Shop I could bring this to to have this properly diagnosed, and repaired.

Thanks All!!!

Duane, the reverse servo is accessed by dropping the pan, and removing four bolts. It's a messy job, but not hard at all.

If I had to guess, I'd say the reverse servo O-ring is broken. If you decide to work on it yourself, Ford offers a revised O-ring seal that has a lip on it that seals better than the original.
(The broken O-ring is just a guess however, so take it for what it's worth.....)

2000 Ranger 3.0, Transmission not working in reverse

Running on Empty
Thanks for your reply!!!
In addition diagnosing the problem at hand, this Ranger 3.0, automatic
5R55E has 93,000 miles on it. While this tranny is (partially?)disassembled what transmission maintenance should be done to get another 90,000 miles on this truck?
Do you or anyone else on this forum recommend any rebuild kits for this tranny while its apart? From day one, 7 years ago I noticed DELAYED SHIFTS . I just assumed this is how Fords operated and got used to it.
Any additional comments on preventing other problems will be appreciated...
Thanks...
