My 2000 Explorer blew its 5r55E at all of 95000 miles. First time Ford has ever failed me but I brought it on myself. I deliver pizzas with it. Although, I do change the fluid on time. But that is a different story for a different day. Question becomes, I have 4.0L OHV Pushrod, I have located 5R55E in a 98 Explorer with SOHC engine. Can't find a definitive answer to if the two are compatible. Has anyone done this? Both are 4WD's, etc. Only difference seems to be the engines. I have seen it done in the Ranger. Don't know why it would be different in the Explorer but the way everything is computer controlled nowadays. Who knows?
I also find it interesting the variability in the life of these transmissions. Some people blow them before the warranty is even up and I have seen some 5r55E transmissions go over 200,000 without any slippage at all. Saw one once at 206,000 with the trans fluid from the factory. Seems like the 5r55E paired with the SOHC is significantly stronger as the one I am looking at purchasing has 157K blown SOHC motor. Its a guy I know so hes (Hopefully) not screwing me and says no slippage at all.
