I have a 97 4x4 explorer that is real slow to drop into drive from park. We checked the fluid level of course and it appears a tad bit overfilled but nothing alarming. Are there any simple things to check before I go and put a valve body in it. The vehicle has 100K on it and seems to shift fine through the other gears. Thanks Chad

The delayed engagement problem is notorious in the A4LD and 5R series. For some the VB rebuild and replacing the boost valve has seemed to help, others have gotten relief from replacing the low/reverse servo O-rings,and for some, neither has helped. Good news, nothing is being harmed. Bad news - frustrating to wait.

The gaskets are another troublesome area that could leak hydraulic pressure. When was the last time the fluid, and filter were replaced? You could have a partially clogged filter, or front cooler. The cooler could be cleaned out with M465KD Transcool cooler cleaner spray ($7.09). There are 2 types of low/reverse seals. One is a double wiper style in rubber, and the other one is a viton "D" ring seal kit (both seals).
