Normal driving no problems, but when decelerating from >45 mph I get a flare or slip from 2-1 (I think) when coming to a stop. I can watch the tach rev up slightly and get a slight feeling of a bump from behind. Just had a fluid change at Ford a couple of months ago. Is this something to worry about.....it was really cold here today 8-13 degrees.

Thanks

Interesting symptom. Let me ask, how many miles on your transmission? You pretty sure it is 2-1 downshift and not 3-2?

I don't have any magic answers, but need a little more info.

It sounds like there is no engine braking. This might be a symptom of the TCC solenoid. The torque converter is synonymous to a clutch on a manual transmission. When the solenoid gets energized, it will engage the torque converter to "lock it up". If this solenoid is malfunctioning, it may have a delayed unlock. This might be that sudden rise, and fall of RPMs with a thunk. The transmission also has a couple of small filters inside of it that could clog the area that the TCC uses. One of them is on a separator plate, another one is in the case that looks like a small spring, and the other one is inside the valve body behind the solenoid. If there is a fluid restriction, it could also cause this problem, so it's not always the solenoid.

Broookln Bay makes good points... often.... I must respectfully point out a "slight" disagreement when he says

"The torque converter is synonymous to a clutch on a manual transmission."

Not quite. The Torque converter CLUTCH is a closer approximation. Probably what he meant anyway.

In the case at hand.... we have a rise in RPM and then an engagement with feel to it. BB may be right about the TCC in this situation...and a good observation.

Remember folks.... in the 5R55 there are 6 (SIX) solenoids. 4 shift and 2 "modulated" ones. Modulated? That means they effectively "vibrate" and fluctuate their output pressures. Hence, they tend to fail. Shift solenoids? the other 4? They are simply ON or OFF. Tend to last a long time without problem, other than clogging if the fluid gets gunky. (Keep that fluid clean!)

In this case, suspect the TCC and EPC as they are the ones that tend to fail due to the "modulation" factor.

Glacier, is there a simple way of doing a TC stall test to figure out what it is? Maybe putting on the parking brake, and revving the engine in different gears, like reverse, and drive to determine if its really the TC itself, or just a VB problem? He could use a pressure gauge on the side port.

Yea, I thought it was strange also. I searched the treads and could not find anything......which I guess is a good thing. Anyhow, 50K on it, I just had fluid changed by Ford and have 1st gear engine braking. No blinking lights or delayed shifts...once in a while I get a hard shift into R, but that really seems to be controlled by whether my foot is on the brake. I'll double check the 2-1 or 3-2 today. Thanks for your input guys.

I found an interesting article that might help you fix this problem. It's really meant for the A4LD transmission, but if you see it, you will get the idea. I'm sure that it must be a similar part. You could do a search on that website for the exact part for your 5R55E. Here is the link: http://www.transmissionspecialty.com/parts/parts/56995A.htm.

Engine slipping gears also (I think)

I hope this is in the correct thread. I have a 1999 XLT with 4.0 SOHC and approx 140, 000 Km. My only problem is on moderate to slow acceleration from a stop, at about 1800 rpm the engine will rev to about 2600 rpm (with no corresponding increase in speed ) and quickly fall back to 1800 rpm. I have taken into the dealer and was told once that they "performed WDS test and updated the PCM to latest codes" all to no avail. Second time I was told that this was "normal". riiiggghhhtttt.....

Any thoughts?

Is this at a shift point?

Hmmm.....I would say that it is. I have been following some of the other "flare " threads and it seems that I have the same problem as others. Is there somewhere that the Ford TSB's can be read? The searches I have tried have so far been fruitless. I am looking for the TSB 3-22-10 in particular.

Thanks ... and Happy New Year...

if you register at this site, give them your VIN they will run an Oasis on your truck. You can ask about the TSB your looking for.
