Hey everyone, first post here, long time lurker. Sorry for the long post.
I have a 98 ranger 4.0 OHV 4wd. To the best of my knowledge that means I have a 5r55e.
185k miles as of now, original transmission etc. Only thing that has been touched on it is the fluid and filter. Mercon V used at all times, fluid is cherry red nothing out of the ordinary.
For the past few years (~30k miles) its been having a intermittent flashing OD light. The 1-2 upshift is rough (it just drops into gear) and the 2-1 down shift is also rough. The stunner is when I pull over and turn the engine on of the light disappears and the trans shifts like butter.
Sometimes this light doesn't turn on for 2 months and sometimes it'l do it every 2 miles. At first I changed the fluid and it stopped doing it for a good while (5k miles). However it came back, so I changed the fluid yet again which helped a bit. Now it is turning on more and more often and I really want to get to the bottom of this.
I have had it hooked up to a Solus etc and I couldent pull a code. When I took it to the trans guy with the light flashing he said I needed a rebuild
Has anyone experienced this? Im thinking about ordering the 6 solenoids from 800700trans for 60$ and giving it a go. I have read countless threads and im just out of ideas.......
