Hi I am having trouble with the input shaft in my 5r55e auto tranny.

The input shaft has slid out about an inch and will not go back in. I can turn it by hand, and can tell that it is still engaged with the gear in the pump.

I have tried spinning it while pushing in and lightly tapping it but it doesnt want to go back in.

Any advice???

Are you talking about looking through the small gap between the stator shaft and the front pump seal?

I can't see much through there.

I know that when i turn the input shaft, there is resistance, like it is still making contact with the gear.

The shaft will not pull out from its current position more than 1/8"

Do i need to remove the bellhousing?

To answer my own question, I removed the bell housing from the transmission while in the vehicle.
Once the housing was removed I was able to pull the input shaft right out and reinsert it into it's proper location.
I then slid the bell housing/ stator spline shaft back over the input shaft and torqued down the 8 bolts to 30 ft lbs.

Now the input shaft is back in it's original position, no smooth section can be seen on the input shaft, just splines.

After seating the TC, the nose of the TC is 0.5" back from the front plane of the bell housing.

Dropped in engine, torqued transmission housing bolts to motor and torqued TC to flywheel bolts.

Turned the crank and it turns fine.

So if you have this problem, don't be afraid to pull the bellhousing.
Nothing popped out onto the floor.
Also, it is my understanding that you don't need to realign he pump if the stator spline shaft plate is not unbolted from the bell housing.

Thanks for the update!

I'm having the same problem as Island Mom, but mine is a 2004 and the bell isn't removable. Going to have to lower the trans, it looks like.
