Hello all. I'm sure this has been addressed, but I have very little time during work to do anything... Here is my problem.

2000 Ford Ranger 4x4
4.0L V6
5R55E Auto
111,000 Miles

symptoms:
NO REVERSE!! This is the main problem.
No manual 1st
2-3 flare

Reverse went out for about 3 days, then started working again. It worked fine for about a week and then went out again and has been gone since. Reverse gave no warning signs before going, it was working fine then nothing, not a slip or hesitation...NOTHING! This vehicle is used as an EMS primary repsonse vehicle for the local FD and needs to be fixed in a hurry. The department is small and has limited funds. We would like to troubleshoot it first and get an idea of cost to repair. I'm thinking that a VB rebuild should do it...What are your thoughts. Also, I have already ordered a Ford VB seperator and VB rebuild kit. Since it was only $40 and some change, we went ahead and got it, I figure I will go ahead with this regardless of what we do to it. I think this site is great, as soon as I get a chance, like my next day off, I'm going to become an elite member. I've already learned a lot from the site. Helped with my 94 ranger tranny problem. THANKS A BUNCH!

theres a good thread on here for rebuilding your valve body, just do a search and you'll find it rather quickly. Your problem is probabally just a bad seperator plate gasket and a bad reverse servo gasket.

Thanks fiftyfeetup for your help. I looked up the diary for the 5r55e and it was very helpful. I will be ordering the necessary parts to do the rebuild. Everyone wish me luck! Thanks again.

Steve.... you report an odd mix of problems... For example, lets assume you get no reverse. Other than possible a misadjusted transmission range sensor (on the side of the case where the shifter enters the case, tells the computer what gear you selected) no reverse has no electrical component. The worst possibility there is a bad reverse clutch. BUT... could also have a damaged separator plate or a blown out gasket (keep this in mind)...

Now we add no manual first. THAT has some possible electrical concerns, including wiring harnesses, external and internal. (New twist added) It also has a possibility of a damaged rear one way clutch (not implicated in the reverse gear, so again, a new wrinkle.) You could also have a damaged separator plate, or a blown out valve body gasket (Aha, something in common).

2-3 flare... a common complaint, sometimes gasket leakage, sometimes vb leakage, sometime EPC.

I hate sounding like a broken record on 5R55E's, but I think a rebuild of the VB with attention to the FORD TSB on the sep plate and gaskets might be the ticket to your happiness. I just am doubting the simaltaneous failures. When you drop the pan... unless you find a bunch of metal filings my bet is on the VB fix.

At 111,000 I'd replace the EPC as well.

Hope this helps. Let us know.
