- 2003 Ford Ranger FX4
Hey guys, just picked up an '03 Ranger FX4 4.0 Auto with 110k last week and I'm already having some issues. My problem is that my 3-4 shift seems slow to me (might be normal), It just slowly winds down RPMs and then it's in gear. When it engages it seems like there might be a very light clunk, hardly audible. From 4-5 there is a slight (100 RPM increase) flare sometimes, then it shifts normal. The flare only lasts a second, doesn't hang enough to notice unless i'm looking at the tack or listening carefully. It also depends on how hard i'm on the throttle. If i'm light on the throttle (letting off to stay a constant speed) it seems to do it worse.
1-2 and 2-3 shift are completely perfect. Smooth, fast, no flare. There is no slip on take off, no funny noises, fluid is clean and full, replaced at 70k.
So, is this just how this transmission is or is it something I should worry about? I'm taking it on a trip next week and i'd like to know if this is something that needs to be addressed soon.
