Heres my situation.
History: I have changed the tranny filter at 90k(dealer) and again today at 174k(me). I have done the flushes at 30k intervals (since 30K) at the cooler. I checked the VB bolts torque and 1 or 2 were below spec but not finger loose. I didnt see any blown gasket meterial and overall things looked good and clean. The pan and filter surface was nasty with greyish blackish film. Is this normal, I read these trannys are dirty devices? Looks like graphite in texture. Probably clutch material and wear.

Symptoms: it will flare between 2 and 3rd, but not all the time. It started this at 163k. It only does it when I drive it and not when the wife is driving. She says it doesnt like me. She drove it from 30k until 160k, thats when it became mine to drive to and from work and I noticed the problem.

I have NEVER had a CEL or blinking OD.

Today when I dropped the pan there was NO metal in the pan or on the magnet. There was a lot of "blackish" sediment in the pan and on the filter. Nasty. The micro media inside the filter was black. I cleaned the pan a put a Napa filter in with 4.5 qts of Valvoline mercon V. It seems to shift better, still minor flare but as I drive it it is not as noticeable.

Should I spend the 100 bucks for the EPC solenoid to address the flare issue or drive it till it dies? I plan on dropping the pan in a couple of weeks to dilute/clean the fluid further. At that time I may try the EPC solenoid. Your thoughts.

Have you removed the valve body to check for a blown gasket? You can't see this by looking with it installed. They usually blow by the reverse servo.

I have been fighting the flare also. I was about ready to spend the big buck's on a new V/B. Then I addjusted the band's now flare gone. Try that.

Are the bands easily adjusted on the 5r55e? I didnt see the procedure for this transmission only for a pre 93 a4ld.

How many bands are there (intermedduate and OD) and are they accessiable without removing anything from the transmission or surrounding stuff like exhaust etc?

The band adjustment procedure is identical between the A4LD and 5R55E.
