Hi there I have a 96' 4.0 with a slightly retrofitted 5r55e that has had a 4r55e valve body and OD band/Intermediate band servos from a 96 4r55 installed with a transgo shift kit. I just within the past 6 months got this truck running again (blew the tranny that i put in it 2 years prior and it needed an engine), after that had happened i found a motor and tranny deal on market place only wanted the engine originally but bought both it sat for 2 years without a motor or tranny while i was trying to find a trans with the same case code to rebuild for it finally said screw it and put the marketplace engine and trans in it and it drove fine for 6 months with 1 consistent problem but recently on my way to work one morning the transmission started acting up it drove fine leaving the house and to the next town over outside of 3rd gear letting loose twice but as soon as the RPM's came back down it grabbed and held fine. But then at the first light i stopped at after driving @ 70MPH for 40 miles it would not grab 1st gear decided to hit the O/D off button and it locked into fist gear almost immediately and held firm heck it even shifted fine all the way thru 3rd. some of the things i have noticed is since no matter weather the engine is hot or cold i either have to cancel overdrive to get it to move and get up to speed or manually shift into first then second the drive and it holds solid on all 3 gears as long as the O/D cancel is activated or it is manually shifted. It does not have reverse no matter what (it just crawls while acting like the torque converter is engaged) this hold the same for the forward gears as well when the od cancel is not activated. i can get it to go into 4th as long as it goes right into full lockup it wont stay in that gear if it is unlocked or needs to down shift and when it does that it is immediate full let loose i can rev up to 5k without resistance. The only thing i have done is throw a complete set of spare solenoids and a PCM that i had and there was no change. From my research and data that i have looked at from my truck according to the atsg rebuild manual the only thing different between od (no O/D cancel) and drive (O/D cancel activated) along with od from manual 1&2 is that the coast clutch solenoid is activated and I'm just lost as to what could be causing this and why having the coast clutch activated allows it to move. i do not have any codes directly relating to the transmission at least not any that have been there and its worked fine. the only codes in the computer are P1500 VSS malfunction, P1835 Transmission Transfer case differential lockup circuit grounded, P1833 Transmission Transfer case differential lockup circuit open. The VSS code has been there since the truck has been running tried changing the VSS Sensor and tightened the output flange nut on the T-case (it was loose), when reading the pid on the pcm with cruse set @ 40 it will vary from 35 to 50 quite the jump it does cause jolting at 80 bc it will jump to 100 wouldn't be surprised if the pcm sees 120 pop up when it happens causing the jolt. The transmission Transfer case codes are because the front diff is pulled (needed a reseal and to check the gears) but that has been pulled for months without any transmission problems. As for the major problem right now im leaning towards either a valve body issue or a VB gasket is blown but I'm not sure. I'm ruling out the torque converter and the clutches since it moves fine then the coast clutch is applied.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated thanks.
Yes i did swap over a 4r55 internal and external harness basically abandoning the rear sensor that would be needed for it to be a 5spd and from my research the major difference that separates the 4r from the 5r is the vb separator plate outside of that they are basically the same transmission the valve bodied are the same as well the only other thing that change ire just year differences that are shared across like 95-96 they used thrust washers throughout where as 97-99 uses roller bearings throughout, and then where the EPC pressure relief is but that is internal to the vb so it is backwards compatible
