99 Ranger
I have a 99 ranger with a 4.0, and the 5r55e tranny. My tranny doesn't have reverse, and only 1st & 2nd gear work on it. When it's in other gears it just acts like its in neutral. It also has the 2-3 flare issue. I have to switch between 1st & 2nd like every 5 minutes because it shakes when i drive it. i was told it could all be fixed by just getting a shift kit and a new valvebody. i did a LITTLE research and i thought getting a new valvebody and shiftkit would just fix the 2-3 flare issues. i dont have reverse, or (D) though. I need to know based on the symptoms i posted if a new valvebody and shiftkit will fix everything, or if i need to just get another tranny.

thanks.

You could rebuild your valve body. Take a look at the sticky threads on the top of the transmission section for more information.
so if i rebuild, or buy just a whole new valvebody with all the revised parts it will fix everything, and ill have reverse back, drive back, etc? id rather buy a new valvebody rather then rebuild mine. i found a website that sells a brand new valvebody with a shiftkit and all the revised parts with a lifetime warranty for only like 200$ will you take a look at it and tell me what you think?

Different members have mixed opinions on that company. So far, most of the members recommend WWW.CentralValveBodies.Com. They give members on this site a discount. The person to speak to is Donny. They might cost a little more than the other website, but they stand behind their products. You could attempt to rebuild it yourself if you want to save a little.

ok ill check that site out. ill stick with a new one i think. it will fix ALL my problems though right??? ill have reverse, and all my other gears back after replacing it??

Sometimes it could have internal damage, but from what you've described, it sounds like it could be the valve body & servos. How many miles does it have?
it has 155k. if i buy a new VB does it come with the servos too? i checked out that site you posted but i think it said those VB's only have a 1 year warranty, and the site i was looking at was lifetime. either way im pretty sure a VB from either site will work just fine. i just dont want to spend the money on a VB than have it installed at a shop and then find out that didnt fix it. are they hard to install or can anyone do it? its like right under the tranny right? i heard its pretty easy and only takes like an hour tops, but i dont know a super lot about cars.

The servos are separate parts, just like the separator plates & gaskets. You will need a new gasket or a bonded separator plate. Use a 1/4" drive In/Lb torque wrench on the bolts. There is a torque spec & bolt tightening sequence chart in the photo gallery as well as in the 5R55E valve body rebuild diary sticky thread.
