Have a 2001 Explorer sport with a 5r55e transmission. I was experiencing with the auto shifting. I dropped the pan on it and found this part inside it. Any idea what it is? I cant seem to find it on the break down part list of the trans. It appears to have some V notches out of the ring in 3 spots.

It looks like a planetary pinion shim, most likely from the overdrive planetary assembly. This shim will not be the cause of any shifting issues you are having, check the valve body gaskets.

Sometimes these brass shims will wear out and come out and only the steel shim is left, it can stay this way for sometime before it would cause any issues.

The shims can also come out if the planet is coming apart and the gears get loose but this should create noises.

I have to say I am impressed. Piblo posts a picture of a mangled trans washer looking thing and 45 minutes later JK replies with 'planetary pinion shim from the overdrive planetary assembly.' And you know what by golly, it looks like that's exactly what it is! I tip my hat to your parts ID prowess, JK080.
(Reading your .sig also gave it away. :salute:)

My '96 4.0 OHV started shifting erratically. I tore it apart, and found a destroyed needle thrust bearing, appeared that allowed the access holes in the shaft through which fluid is directed, to misalign, preventing fluid flow. I was a lot younger then, today I worry over whether my 5R55S will be too much for me to yank out, up on jack stands. So far, it just keeps purring along, '04 4.0 OHC, 156K. imp
