I need to replace the transmission in my father n laws 2003 2WD Sport Trac. It has the 5R55E transmission. I have found many 97-01 explorer 4.0 SHC with 5R55E in 2WD in my local junkyard. I have seen that there are 2 different versions, one that was made from 97-01 and then they must have changed it as there is a different part number for 01-05 5R55E trans. Does anyone know if the 97-01 version will work in the 03 sport trac.

I don't want to put a rebuilt trans in the car and its current trans is toast.

I also posted this in the Sport Trac Forums.

Thanks in advance!!!

Anybody know, I can't seem to find much on the transmissions after searching, but I have seen that the part numbers have changed starting in 2001.

Thanks!

Hi, sorry, I don't know the answer to your question. But... any reason why you don't want a rebuilt transmission? A rebuilt can often be better than OEM since the rebuild kits typically come with improved replacement parts... usually replacing a part that was typically responsible for your original transmission failing in the first place. Just curious.

They added an output shaft speed sensor in 01+. You can put a 01+ in an older truck but you have to put a 01+ in a 01+. 01-03 Sport trans will fit Sport Trac.

The main reason is cost. I can get a used transmission for $150 and a rebuild/remanufactured for $1400.

Thanks a bunch this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for saving me a bunch of heartache!!

Well I looked and my local junkyard doesn't have any trans worth pulling. All are over 200k and they arent wrecked. So I don't know if they are any good. Anyone know if a later ranger with a 4.0 v6 and 5r55e will work. It is a low mileage 2005 ranger. It shows a different part number than the explorer sport trac.

Thanks!!

did the ranger transmission work I'm in the same boat
