I have been dealing with the 2nd to 3rd gear shift issue since July. I read all the forums and I have seen many articles showing the same things about replacing the valve bodys, solenoids, gaskets ect... I have tried them all and here are results:
1. I ordered from Quality Transmission in Florida and i'm going to give two words.... Not Satisfied... I ordered my first VB in July and that body failed in September. I then called back and the VB was warrantied so they sent me another one. One of the solenoids was cracked so my truck was stuck waiting for them. Then, they said they would do over night shipping and I waited 5 days. Once that one was recieved I installed it and my tranny is now shifted "OK"; not perfect but alright. I can't floor it through all the gears or I get a small slip between 3rd and 4th now not 2nd and 3rd. If I just drive it like my mom does then its good. That could also be because I have put so much new fluid in the tranny it's just now going to slip a little. Either way don't order through Quality Transmissions. Oh, and when you ask them technical questions they have NO CLUE about anything. Its BS if you ask me.
My conclusion to the 2nd to 3rd gear shift is that "Yes, the gasket is the culprit or the VB is sh**ty". The first VB gasket was bad but the 2nd it was the VB. Follow all the torque specs to a T and follow a good diagram of the bolt order. Also, after the VB is in your hands tighten the 3 allen bolts on the back plate (97 in-lbs if i'm correct) on the VB because they were all loose when I go it (big suprise). I found that the torque specs are 71 in-lbs first then 97 in-lbs after. The four bolts that hold the actuator in are to be tightened to 115 in-lbs.
Other than that I am trying to sell it or baby it... But, thats boring so it's gotta go. Hope this helps anyone dealing these stupids trannys.
