5R55E valve body issues.

I recently purchased a valve body from Transmission works, and only goes into reverse. Put my original one back on and now is only in drive constantly. Is there anything special that needs to be done as far as settings on the valve body or anything like that so it works correctly. Do I need to clear the codes on the computer, or is resetting it by removing the battery terminals enough. I am gonna purchase one from 1800700trans that someone recommended on there, as I spoke with them and they were very helpful.

I am a newbie here, so any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your post into its own thread. Check the linkage adjustment, and the range sensor before you throw another valve body into it.

I know where that is. It's not far from the Belt Parkway. The range sensor is near the shift linkage. It could be out of alignment or possibly going bad.

would that keep it in just one gear cause when i drive it down the block and manualy shift it seems to go from first to second but no other gears. even in park it seems to still be in drive. someone told me when putting in valve body to set that pin that slides in and out in park. you know the one with all the grooves that directs the pressure, how do you know where park is to set that pin if thats true and once you put valve body in do you re connect the battery or fill tranny then reconnect one other question what is the proper talk for the bolts on valvebody thanks walter

I think that you should adjust the shift cable first. Check # 19 in my list of useful threads for information on how to do this. # 67 has information on valve body bolt torque specifications.

Moving again

OK, I got the valve body in and the truck can now go in drive, neutral, reverse, etc. I am still having a problem though as it only goes into second gear and will not shift any further then that. The truck was hit on the front left side before I got it, and I was wondering if the computer for the transmission was up there, and if anyone thinks that might have something to do with it, or any other ideas as for what the problem might be.

Did you adjust the bands or replace the accumulator servos?

shifting

bought valvebody from tranzmission works said fully tested so i did nothing but bolt it on new filter and fluid. did not touch anything else.this is what it was doing orginally. when you drive it shifts once then twice then about thirtyfive mph it will not shift it starts to rev 3500rpm also put speed sensor in no difference it,s like it shifts two or three times then revs could only drive 35mph any faster it revs

seems to be shifting at least three times then 45mph 3000 rpm,s no other shifts

sounds like might have some forward clutches bad hard to tell with these models

4th and 5th

went to garage put on computer . they told me slipping in 4th and 5th which i already knew while driving it feels like it,s bucking to go into 4th slightly but not going. he suggested changing all servos, or he said it could be shift plates if it were shift plates would,nt it go into the gear but slip. does anyone have SUGGESTIONS thanks walter

will a 96 explorer 4.0 trans work in my 97 is it the same

The 96 has a 4 speed 4R55E & the 97 has a 5 speed 5R55E.
