I've been searching high and low, on the internet and at various dealers, shops, parts stores, even the local library, but I can't find anything with a diagram of the VB internals for the 5R55E ('99 X 4.0 SOHC).

While doing some VB maintenance one of the pistons and its spring fell out (there was no retainer for the bore) and I don't know which way they go back in. I *thought* I knew which way, but after putting it back together it overheated so badly it burnt the fluid and turned it yellow and it boiled over out the vent.

I don't want to put it back together again until I know how its supposed to go, but I can't find anywhere with a manual. I need to know if it was right before, and the problem is something else, or if this is indeed my problem.

does anyone know where I can get an exploded view of the VB for the 5R55E?

Sorry, don't have a picture of the VB for ya.You may end up taking the VB to a trans shop and have them put it back together for you, or buy a shop manual from ATSG. I bought the ATSG manual off ebay before I even took the VB off and I was very glad I did. There are 6 bolts that attaches the VB to the trans housing and they all have to go back in the way they came out, not including the check balls and valves.

Anybody know where I might find this ASTG manual locally? (don't want to wait for shipping)

I'm in CT
Thanks

Most all trans parts stores will carry the ATSG manual. Buy one of those manuals for each transmission that you do work in the valve body for.

I recently installed a TransGo correction kit into my 99 5R55E. There are six "L" shaped retainers which can fall out when the valve body is turned over, while you are working with it. Two of mine fell out, and I had forgotten to buy that manual when I bought my parts. I have it now, and it has a very poor picture of the internal parts of the 5R55E valve body. The resolution is poor, but I managed to discern where my "L" shaped retainers belonged.

Check out page 52 in that manual. Good luck,
Don

Transmission parts store? I've never seen such. An auto parts store that specializes in tranny parts? We have NAPA and the like, and of course the now ubiquitous Pep-Boys and AZ, but no tranny parts stores I've ever seen.

Just where does one find a transmission parts store?

I have two here in Knoxville, an ABC Transmissions, and a Wrightway transmissions. All they do is sell transmission parts here.

Call any trans repair shop, and ask them where they buy their parts from. I suggested that, because I assume that you need help quickly. If you had more time, you could find the stuff on Ebay, or the larger trans repair chains around the country. Good luck,
Don

Napa can order the ATSG manuals, but they don't normally keep them in stock. I get them from there, but its the next day before I can get it. You can also order them from the website atsgmiami.com , but with shipping its cheaper at napa and faster.

I have a stack of them, but I haven't broken my 5R55E yet, so I don't have that particular one.

PM me, and I will photocopy it from the FORD Shop manual and snail mail it to you.

Nice gesture Chris, I know that the ATSG manual's page is a photocopy of the Ford manual. I have both, and neither picture is very clear. It is easier to see in person, which is why I suggested getting the manual. It's a great resource, and it only costs about $14.

Actually in the case of the 5R55E I think the FORD manual is better and more complete on the valve body.... but you are right for $14 ithe ATSG manual IS a good investment.

Funny thing Chris, the same page 52 in th Ford manual has a very good picture of the "N" series valve body. I didn't find any this good for the 5R55E, when I looked the first time.
Don

Don I don't find what you reference in my FORD 4r55 5r55 manual. In "sub assembly" I have 13 pages of valve body breakdown. In disassembly the VB pics are on pages 43, 44 and 45. Maybe we have different versions ?

Sorry Chris, mine is the 5R55W/S & N. Tht explains why it didn't have any specific 5R55E parts. I bought it to help with the V8 version, and figured it would show differences with the earlier V6 parts.
Don

Don I picked up the FORD 3 ring version for that too, and just looked at it for the first time (was saving it for my ill fated 55W purchase last fall) I don't see a page 52, but in sub assembly on the VB (main control) it SUCKS! piss poor.
