I have a 03 Eddie bauer V6 with the 5r55s tranny. 146k on the tranny, fluid serviced by Ford at 70k. Not sure if they pulled the pan or just flushed it.

We are inspecting the tranny to make a informed decision about fixing a PO741 Error. Tranny shifts fine at expected points, goes into O/D, shifts are smooth except it does not lock up the TC.

Pan was clean with sludge around the magnet, no shavings. ATF was dark red, but still clear. Smelled like clean Merc ATF. no acrid burn smell to it . Cut open the filter where we found metal shavings. Based on my Manual tranny experience, I don't think it is excessive, but I don't know enough about A/T's to trust my gut instinct.

I have no idea what one would consider "normal" wear and tear for 146K . Informed opinions please?

That seems excessive to me, but don't cut open many filters either. There are some good size pieces in there, somthing is going on.

Maybe the converter is coming apart and thats your converter code.

The only way to know if everything is ok for sure is to take it apart and look.

The P0741 code in most cases is the converter itself and or the valve body, like worn valve bores and pressure leaks.
