Newbie here from the IFSJA where I've been a loyal and long term member but finally had to sell my FSJ. Ended up with a 2000 XLS, 4.0 sohc and 5 spd auto. I noticed that when when I manually place the shift selector in 1st gear (or any gear for that matter) it does not seem to compression brake when when decending an incline. Is this normal because of the control-trac system or is there something else going on? It's a little bit disconcerting descending a steep hill in 1st gear and watching the speedo climb over 25 or 30 mph while the tach is still at 800 rpm!!!! I'm a big fan of brakes but this seems wrong!!

Do a search for my name and no engine braking. (from ~ Dec 2000) Basically, there is a TSB out that they need to replace the separator gaskets in the transmission's valve body. That's the whole issue in a nutshell.

BTW: What's the IFSJA?

The IFSJA is the International Full Size Jeep Association. I had a 1988 Grand Wagoneer for quite a while. great web site if your a full size jeep fan. (full size jeeps are pretty much anything other than the CJ's, wranglers, TJ's, etc..)

Thanks all for the info. My X goes in on Tuesday next week for the TSB upgrade. Preciate it!!!! BTW is there any WA state X clubs or anyone in and around WA on the board here?

should be a safety recall!

Why isn't this considered a safety recall issue? I know that when I learned to drive, they told us that if the brakes failed to utilize engine braking as an alternate method of slowing down the car. Also, I would think someone could get into serious trouble if towing down steep grades and found out no engine braking was available. Another case of Ford looking out for the best interest of their customers instead of the bottom line! Anyone believe this? You'd think that Ford should be able to build decent engines and transmissions. They've only been doing it for a 100 years! Let's see the SOHC engines are junk, and the transmissions are junk and the manufacturer doesn't stand behind any of it, because they know it's junk.
