5th alternator in a month...help.

Your starter solenoid is connected to the fender right by the battery. It's a round thing with a couple bolts and wires connected to it, one of the wires should be a thin wire with a red boot.

Is there a seperate voltage regulator on the X or is it built into the alternator?

I purchased a PowerMaster alternator from Summit and love it. 140amps.

yeah I cant remember if the regulator is external or not, but I hope they aren't reusing it when your alts are replaced...

also have you checked all wiring, say the cable from the alt to batt? In my old ex it fried about halfway through, you couldn't see it, it was I believe snaked under the intake manifold.

the wire going to the battery from the alternator is 0/1 guage lightning audio wire. it's wierd though, the volts will read about 13 and then instantly drop to 9 then really quickly fluctuate as i'm driving and then it will drop permanantly down to 9 then it might, after a while, go back up to 13.

Whats wierd about that? The bad cable probably heats up and gains resistance. I'd get a new wire ASAP or your gonna fry this one, too.

which wire, the one going to the starter or the smaller one going to the starter silenoid?

could it be either or does someone have a pretty good idea on which one could be bad?

Check the ohms of each wire when the votage drops. The one with super high ohms would be bad. After changing out 5 alternators, I'd replace all the cabling, and be done with it.
