I have the regulator 7805 I need to know what color wires should be coming off the regulator with the regulator on my desk with the leads pointing at me and I can
read the 7805 do I put the red wire on the left and black in the middle then the white
on the right. I am also wanting to know what gauge wire to use and how long to make them.
I am installing a Pioneer Avic Z3 in my sport trac it has stock sub and amp.

Thanks !!!!!!!

black goes to ground and the other ones it doesnt matter which goes which way, one to the radio amp turn on and one to the car amp turn on. 18g wiring or bigger will be fine

How long should I make the leads?

I am taking it in to a shop for the install so I would like to know how long to make the leads I am doing the soldering myself.

6 inches of wire are plenty for the through lines. 12-18 are plenty for the ground, depending on where the shop will ground it. Because I grounded it to the harness ground, I needed no more than 6.

Check out the big brain on Flounder! You're a smart <blah>. That's right -- 6 inches. :p:

EDIT: In retrospect, I have no idea why I posted that -- typical for most of my posts.

Thank you very much that is what I needed to know !!!!!!!!!!!!

You're out of your mind, my friend. :mattmoon:

Because I grounded it to the harness ground,
I also have have need to make the regulator. Do I wanna ground the regulator to the chassis harness ground or the Amp harness ground? Here's my harness.

Thanks Fellas!

I do not know where they grounded it I had a stereo shop do the work but it works great.

Thanks Fellas!

You can ground it directly in the harness, or you can install it back by the amp (easier to me). It's your choice. The component draws negligible current, so leeching power/ground from the existing wire will hurt nothing. Also, the mounting tab at the top of the VR package is a ground if you want to just take out a screw somewhere and put it on there. Good luck.

Thanks for the input! I'm installing behind the head unit as I've just purchased a new Kenwood and I'm installing it all at once.
Off topic.....About my harness (probably not the proper thread for this)
Do I need to y my RCA? My harness only has the one RCA (mine is actually white though, not red?) my h.u. has red and white sub outs.

I saw the Metra harness comes with both red and white RCA but the instructions state that only the white RCA will be used. So I guess that answers my question. But I read somewhere that I'd need to y cable the RCAs. I'm a bit confused.

What does this regulator do?

The RCA doesn't need to be Y'd. It's just hard to figure out which one to use (I THINK it's the red one). The same harness is used in many vehicles, and the Mustangs have subs front AND rear- therefore, the second RCA. Which KW unit are you installing, and I'll look at the specs on it- some of theirs only have a single mono sub output, some (like mine) have stereo. I did Y mine when I had it on the factory sub, but it wasn't necessary.

Excelon KDC-x493

Yes, Y the output of the receiver to one of the plugs on the harness- I just don't remember which one . Also, the harness has 2 remote turn-on leads- just hook 'em together. This is IF your harness has both the RCA's, else just hook it up straightforward.

Note: Make sure to use the amplifier lead on the amp and NOT the power antenna.

Cool
Thanks so much for your input! I really appreciate it! Gonna go get the y and then I'm almost done!
Dash is all open and empty lookin'. Regulator's all tested and harnesses soldered (except for 12v switched and ground) Now all I'm waiting for is my SwiJack (steering wheel)
Friggin' first one was defective, had to send it back for a new one. 'Sposed to be here today, but...............still waiting. Losin' daylight too! :o(
Oh well, c'est la vie
Thanks again, kind sir!
