6"Skyjacker mud tire size & type.

HI Guys & Gals
Our 94 2Dr Explorer is joining, or will be joining our BIG Bronco for future off road trail runs with our 2BigBroncos 4x4 club. It will be the first Explorer to join this club. But our club accept's ALL vehicles! Being a "less weighted" brother of the Bronco, I think some of the guys are looking forward to how it does considering the DURABILITY of a FORD and they already know that! We thought our Explorer should be a good compliment to our 78"Bronco. But a lift has become priority ONE. So I have ordered the Skyjacker class II kit w/o the rear set up, since they are offering at this time. That's ok I will do the SOA with the set up and they offer the shocks for the flip. Right now we are running the Cooper SST 30x9.50 tires. They are in good shape so what works good for extreme trail use off road in the EXPLORER. I'm thinking like BFG M/T in maybe a 33x9.50. Any suggestions from more experienced Explorer owners would be appreciated. 4.56 gears will come when upgrading the tires plus ARB's. I already have the rear! Thanks in advance. Steve

Steve,
33x12.50 M/Ts seems to be the tire of choice with a 6" lift.
The extra width will give you alot more grip on and off road. They'll fit but you should use an 8 or 10 inch rim.
I personally run Pro Comp muds, they're made by Cooper Tire.
Good luck with your upgrades. .

Thanks Gary
When I called Skyjacker they said a 33x12.50 is not recommended with this lift. But they did add a 9.50 wide does work. Also I am VERY concerned about the spindle nut holding the bearings on the front loosening up on me during off roading or heading home! I'm thinking the 33x9.50 is a lighter tire and therefore would provide less dead weight pulling on the nut. Any thoughts, that is the one weak link I'm trying to avoid. Has anyone else had the same problem? And do you think this might help. Thanks. Steve

Steve,
I've never heard that before, seems like about everyone on this board uses 12.50 wide tires on their 6 inch lifts.
Usually the only problems with spindles and wheel bearings is when using a 10 inch rim, this puts more strain on the wheel bearings. Properly tigntened spindle nuts should not come loose under any conditions. I personally run a 10 inch rim and have no problems.

I don't understand how the lift would be effected by the width of the tire. Can anyone explain that?

Maybe you should phone Superlift and see what are their recommendations.

i have the 6 inch skyjacker kit i run a 33/12.50 with no rubbing however i did cut the fenders and cleared 35's 'for a short time after the 33's but now i am back to 33's and don't rub at full flex u said u are doing a spring over well let me suggest the zimmerman mod i just finished my soa with zimm springs and it flexes the best i have seen from an explorer but one problem is i snaped my E-brake cable from too much flex

Thanks Clint & Gary
I thought the extended radius arms might have been the reason they didn't want 12.50's on it or the fenders! however your radius arms are fine Clint so I'll find out if it is the fenders. If so, I will try a used 33x12.50 set and see what happens? I'll keep ya' posted. Also let me know if any thing else you guys can think of that I might want to know. Thanks again

i cleared 33-12.50's with out cutting and had no rubbing before i put 35's on with a 33 1250 u will have no rubbing i am almost positive but sometimes u get different resolts from the same lift btw i didn't cut out the whole fender just trimmed the rear of the front fenders to fit 35-1250's just clearing up what i said before
