I am going to be moving my front component system to custom kick panels. This leaves the front doors emtpy. Could I install a set of 6" JL audio subs in the front door locations? Would this help or hurt my sound?

I will also have 2 12's in the rear.

I think you'd want to either put some fill or leave them empty. The subs will probably drown out your components.

what are the size of the components? I currently have 6 1/2s in kick panels, and if i were to place anything in the door, it'd be a 4in or so mid bass... thusly making a 3way component set. I wouldn't waste time on a seperate 6in sub

honestly, it would be alot more of a project that just bolting them in. they will need their own sealed mini-enclosure, and the door will need hella-soundproofing to keep rattles and resonances in check.

Why don't you got with a 5 1/4. I just got my adapter plates and I will be putting my new speakers in there soon.

actually there are a lot of people that will put 6 1/2's in the doors to fill in the midrange gap between the smaller components and the subwoofers. For good sound quality, I'd reccommend it. Provided the install is good, the results will be good. Of course using the subs in the doors would take some installation tweaks, such as sound deadening and new adaptor plates to go from 5x7/6x8 to 6 1/2, and I am unsure as to the depth of these subs, they may need to be pushed more outward of the door frame than the stock door panel can afford, thus you'll be doing some tweaking to the door panel. I say go for it as long as you install them properly! Good luck...

I have seen 6x8 component systems in the crutchfield catalog but I don't know if they are on the website. four of them are my plan as money allows as well as 5 1/4 kick panels.

my 3-way components include a tweeter, a 4" midrange, and a 6.4" woofer. You could definitely add something like that to good effect. you may run into problems with crossover frequencies and figuring out levels etc. but if you can iron those out you'll love the sound.

i did do a little extra work on mine to improve the sound with the 6.5 woofers in there- i filled the major holes in the door with some thin mdf, sound deadened the hole door and sprayed the back of the door panel plastic with rubberized undercoating. there are no rattles and nothing but great sound. I usually keep my crossover set right aroun 90 hz and they hit real nice in that 90-200 range that most systems struggle with.

good point about the depth though- mine fit with about .2 niches to spare. I used about a 3/4" spacer between the speaker and the door and anything more would have butted up with the door panel- and anythign less would have been to far into the door and hit the glass.

one other thing- if you are going to be running a 3-way component set it is proper to have the largest size speaker in the door and the other two imaged a little better. If you could image all three it would maybe be a little better- but you would never want a 6.5" in a kickpanel and a non-imaged 4" in the door

Expo... on that note... ever seen in a sploder or similar (ranger or ST) one or 2-6 1/2 in the bottom of the door? Where the little pocket holders are and are carpeted? Sure, metal would have to be trimmed away in back, but if ya ran 2 6.5s in the door then and a 5.25 or 4in in a kick w/ a tweeter...

Get what I'm thinking? Any thoughts?

My brother might be getting my old 6.5s and i'll be lookin to redo my front stage... Just some goofy thoughts... :D

i haven't seen it- but i have considered doing it. however i wouldn't do it the way you are saying- i would put them there sticking out of the door and imaged up- sort of as a continuation of the kickpanels into the door

Yeah, at dinner i was kinda thinkin... take and trim out a portion, or that whole carpeted lower section, and leave the rest, then build a seperate fiberglass piece that mounts in place on the door, which hold the speakers, which could come out as far as the old map pockets, which would allow a bit of angling/imaging, and then take up less space in the door.

Also, I think it'd be more fun (complicated and time consuming and detailed) to run 6.5s in each door, and I was lookin at maybe a mid level (good brand) 6.5 there then a good quality upper end (same brand) 5.25s for a kick panel.... Hmm the ideas... Now to get some door panels I can ruin...
