A year after tranny rebuild on '91 automatic 4X4 tranny I had a hard failure. The shops been great and has it back on the road for no-charge but I've been back 6 times over the last few months due to high 4000s RPMs on shift from 1st to 2nd whenever the truck has sat for a few hours...and it's doing it again??? I'm not sure all they've tried but they are persistent and willing but seem perplexed!

A trip to pick the brains of the Ford mechanics on my symptoms mentioned one possibility....the hardening of the Intermediate Clutch Servo. Can anyone comment on what this Servo is, where it is and if it sounds like the culprit? Do it myself possible?

the early explorer trannys are notorious for screwing up, I had a 92 EB and mine went out 3 times. they just suck, i dont know what to tell you

6 times and its under warranty? Why not just build you another?

I think we'll end up rebuilding however it appears with this shop owner it may take another 6 times via a piece-meal process...I thought maybe if I could get some insight from the forum experts I might be able to drive the correct fix the next time in. The fact that he's still giving it his all and not charging me is why I don't go elsewhere.

The problem could be a hardening of the servo and it is something you could do yourself.

The servo's are located on the passenger side of the transmission and stick out sideways. They are covered by a metal disk held in place by a snap ring. You can remove the servo by removing the snap ring and either prying the disk out of the way or using compressed air to blow it out of the hole. I would reccomend using the compressed air so you dont damage any seals.

You will need to remove the servo before buying a new part since there are about 8 or 9 different choices and the tech will have to match the numbers. Good luck!

I didn't quite follow the compressed air method....do you just shoot the air in the cylinder to loosen the disk or did you mean something else? Also, Can you work around the catalytic converter or do you need to remove it somehow???
