Hey all! So I found a ranger fx4 with 4.56 gears and I was interested in doing a regear on my Navajo on a budget. I know that the ranger axle is not as wide as the explorer and the outside of the axle is pretty rusted so I'm really only interested in the differential. My question is can the diff center and pinion be simply pulled out and dropped into another 8.8 with the same spline count? Or does the gear set need to be reset up checking the tolerances, backlash, and shimming it etc?
I have seen how the center of Toyota axles can be simply pulled out and kept assembled in the case but from the videos I've watch of disassembling the 8.8 the pinion comes out separately.
I have mechanical experience but don't want to try to take on an actual regear.

This has been confusing me and would appreciate the clarity.

Thanks!

It will need to be reset. The 8.8 diff does not drop out like Toyota rear end or a 9"
Okay that is what I was I trying to avoid, thanks for the response. So at that point it wouldn't be much different than buying a gear set and having a shop install them?

correct mine as well get new gears and master install kit

Thanks for the info, I will stick the original plan just get a complete 8.8 axle with a 4.10 ratio when I am prepared to have the d35 regeared.
