8.8 on its way out????

I doubt it's a u-joint but you'll know if it it by feeling for play and seeing if it's leaking. A 9" is out of the question if you think it's going to cost the same as an 8.8 rebuild. 450.00 for a tru trac and a set of gears? I'd ask him where those gears are from, brand etc. You may be getting a good price but not a set of crap gears that will make noise also. If you are in need of just gears however you don't have to change the carrier. I'd go for a ring & pinion and a master kit. I've got prices in the vendor forum..if you've got a mechanic who is a friend you'd be better off buying the parts yourself and bringing them to him.

I was actually looking at your prices when he got ahold of me. He uses the motive performance gears, and he will be rebuilding/adding more clutches to my trac loc. Thanks for the advice though i appreciate it.

The last two times I've lost a u-joint if caused a nasty vibration under load only. It got worse as the speed went up. The u-joint felt tight when I checked it (pry it with a screw driver). I took it down anyway and found that it was extremely tight. Turns out some of the needle bearings had moved and the joint was binding when turning.

This happened both times when a rear u-joint was going bad.

Its not a vibration, everything is still very very smooth. Just the wail/howl. Its there sometimes and not others, i took it to a local driveline shop and they said i lost a pinion or carrier bearing and it caused the tolerances to change and the gears are gonna wear super fast and give out.
