Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I just purchased a 95 explorer rearend. I wanted the 4.10 gears and they said they are without a doubt4.10. However i turned the pinion on the axle two full turns to net one turn on the wheel. That to me isnt 4.10. I could be wrong. Could you help me out with some info and how to find out what the gears really are. I would appreciate it greatly thanks in advance OH im pretty sure its out of a 95

The easiest way to tell the gear ratio is if the tag is still attached. If someone removed it your best bet is to remove the rear cover and count the number of teeth on the ring gear and the pinnion gear. Then devide the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinnion. This will caculate your gear ratio.

also i belive if only one wheel turns then it spins twice as fast doesn't it???

Yes thats right, if only one wheel spins then it spins twice as fast. I may be wrong and correct me if I am but I don't think 4.10's or 3.73's came as and open diff. Locking diffs are tough to spin one wheel by hand if the clutches are good.

There are 3 ways to find the axle ratio

1. The tag off the diff. Bottom row of numbers near bolt for example 3L73 or 3 27 (if theres an L between the numbers the diff is a traction lok) If the first number is unreadable these are the only available ratios:
3.27, 3.55, 3.73 and 4.10

2. Look on the door tag for the axle code. Then look in the owners manual for the break down of the codes typically a 2 number code (eg 37) is open while a letter and a number (eg C9) is a traction lok.

3. With both wheels off the ground, the e-brake off and the tranny in neutral spin both wheels at the same speed one revolution. Count the number of time the driveshaft spins. Refer to above ratios and pick the closest one and there you are.

REMEMBER TO ALWAY BLOCK THE FRONT WHEELS AND USE JACK STANDS WHEN WORKING UNDER A VEHICLE!
