89 Cavalier cutting out.

Hey everyone. I was driving home tonight in my 89 cavalier, and all of a sudden the car just died. It started right back up and the motor would just cut out occasionally. I could get the car up to 45 sometimes and the motor would just cut out for a second repeatedly. I dont know what the heck is wrong. I was about a mile from my house and my friend was following me and he pushed me home with his car. Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

damn car ran out of gas. The gauge said I still had an 1/8th of a tank. I can usually go about a 1/4 inch under the "E" on the gauge before I need gas, but I guess not this time
