looking at a post on craigslist for an 1989 ranger auto trans 4x4 2.9l v6.
little over 100k miles on it. the guy says it runs and shifts great. whats the life expectancy on these?

Being a Hawaii truck, that mileage may be accurate. The weakest link is the transmission, which should be the A4LD, same as 1st gen Explorers. The engine could last a good long time, check this link and scroll down halfway to "Known Problems".
