I disassembled my rear axle to start my 97 disc swap and once i got it all apart to order my new wheel bearings an seals i wonder if i am going to have a problem with my backing plate being alot thicker then the stock drum brake one??

this will bring my bearing out 1/4" or so and if the inner race sits in the same place as it is now in the axle tube the bearing will not ride in the race with any preload and actually have play in the bearing....

or if when installing the new bearing and seal assembly should i shim anywhere or will everything work out when i wave my magic wand....

thanks

Jimi

I cannot help with your question, but I believe you mean an 8.8 rear not a 9".

no i definately mean 9" 4.56 gears and a spool

with a HP 44 up front and 12 inches of lift....

soon to be 38s :D

i am just wondering how the rear of the 9" will work with the axle bearings and the disc backing plate over 3 times the thickness of the drum plate...

You're trying to do a '97 disc swap.....So you're using the rear components from a '97 explorer to put on your 9" rear? If so, I believe you're venturing into the fabrication department as I doubt this will be a direct 'bolt on'.
You may want to try and search specifically for 9" disc brakes and see what you can come up with.
If you are upgrading your stock rear end with discs, it is a direct bolt on with a scratch to the head on how to connect to existing parking brake cables.

I also didnt know that you can just bolt on the explorer brakes without some modifications, I believe 95exploderboy is running 2nd gen disks on his 9".

Im in the process of putting disks on mine right now, im using weld on brackets with 1/2 ton chevy 4x4 calipers and 79 f150 rotors.

okay well i will keep trying to search i can't find anything here.....

the 97 backing plate is a direct bolt on the 9 inch housing i have seen this with my own eyes.

the backing plate is just quite alot thicker and i am wondering if the bearing will be in harms way by coming out of the axle tube by the thickness of the new backing plate....

i will try to post up pics when i get home tomorrow...
