my 91 odometer says 94k miles. i am 99% sure it's not 194k.... never the less, the engine feels like it getting tired and i'd like to have it rebuilt. i think the easiest thing is to keep this engine rather swapping out, due to changes made in other years (o2 sensor, egr, etc). i live in southern cali and i'm looking for some recommendations on who can rebuild it for me and what the approximate cost should be.
thanks for your input!:)

Not quite sure of the costs or who can do this, but once you get this done can you make another thread and let us know how it turned out? Thanks alot

Have you done a compression test? No way I would shell the money out for a rebuild unless I knew for a fact the engine was going.

no compression test yet. but i plan on r/r'ing the brakes and the oil pan gasket. my X has been leaking oil like a seive (sp). so when i replace those items i'll run a compression check.

On the east coast a NAPA remanufactured engine was about $1800 +core. It was rebuilt by a local company Capitol City Rebuilders. It was a short block, so unless you have modified the heads or crank it won't make a difference. It also came with a 3-yeat 60,000-mile warrenty. If you do all the work yourself, except the machine work, you should be able to rebuild with parts for about $1200.

I have seen three engines with high milage tore apart. All I would do is a valve job and install a low-end torque cam and lifter set. These heads are prone to ware the rocker arms. Then the cam can not open the valves to the correct lift. Also the valve seat ware out. Try this first before you do a complet overhaul. New rockers, cam,
lifters, will get you alot of power back.

I havent seen that many apart, but I will agree about rebuilding the top end. When I tore my 150k mile engine down, the only real problems were with the heads, and valve train. Rings, bearings were all in really good shape- bearings were at mid point of specs. Do a compresion test - check the rings, may be its all in the heads.

But I wouldnt rebuild based on mileage under 100k- no way. Replace the heads and rockers(with hardened cups), pushrods and a new cam if you want. Clean the intakes and use the updated Ford gaskets when you put it all together.

Good Luck

thanks for the info... i guess i'll be upgrading the heads and valve train pretty soon. :)
