I just had mine removed for an all-over paint job. I believe they are aligned using holes but are mounted with tape. I left mine off and had the holes welded closed.
As was mentioned earlier, they should be stuck on with tape, but have little pegs holding them straight. try using fishing line to get underneath them first to start, then pry them off.
Fishing line will probably work better because it's stronger. That tape is tough! Also, take a hairdryer and heat the emblem up for about 2 to 3 minutes, that'll loosen up the tape. It was very easy for me to get my Ford emblem off, easier than I expected. Just take care not to damage the paint.
