How hard is it to swap a c4 tranny into my 91 explorer? I like the truck but the thought of having lasting issues with a problematic tranny isn't my idea of fun. I've read a few things about needed a bell housing from a 76+ v6 'stang. What else do I need? Can I use my same oil cooler? How about the flywheel and stuff? What about the shifter linkages and driveshaft? Anything I miss? Anyone ever done this before?

Don't unless you aren't daily driving the rig. I just pulled a C5 out of mine for an M5OD. The stock 2.8L torque converter will stall to 3500 in a 4.0 explorer. I paid $200 to have a converter made out of a V8 mustang II converter, and it still is too loose. It turned 2200+ in town to maintain 40 mph and turned 3200-3500 on the highway at 60. it slipped out 500 rpm all the time.

You will have to get an Arly ranger or BroncoII trans crossmember (83-85) and modify it to fit in the frame rails. You'll have to rework the trans lines, install and after market or factory floor shifter from a C5 Ranger or BII... it was a lot of work and I undid it all to put the Manual in because it was pretty useless as a daily driver.

Do it....make a good wright up! I believe you need a bellhousing from like an 85 bronco II or so. You need a touque converter(not sure where or what you get). explorer auto flywheel and spacer i believe. the c4. transfer case(id go with a dana 20 tcase). Custom trans lines. You can yuse the oil cooler you have. custom length driveshafts. cool floor shifter.

The only problem thats keeping me from doing this swap is there is no overdrive in the c4.
