91 explorer auto transmission

have no forward or reverse gears in my wifes explorer. fluid level is good,shift linkage is good. she was having a problem last week with it not shifting smooth but now it does nothing when put in any gear.

The tranny is shot. Simple. Time to rebuild or replace it.

torque converter

sounds like your torque converter has gone out .. depending on how it was acting before it started going out you might be good with a fluid change and a new torque converter. Depending on how mechanical you are you might change it yourself if not you will be at your tranny shops mercy..
