Hi. I hope someone can help me with two problems I have with my truck. I have a 91 Explorer Eddie Bauer V6 4.0.

One of the problems is it doesn't go into overdrive or lock up. It goes through 4 gears but rpm's do not drop after the 4th gear. The overdrive is not a push button.

The other problem is i have no 4x4. I push the 4x4 button and nothing happens. No light either.

I appreciate any help.

Thanks.

In the A4LD, there are only 2 things controlled by the computer... TC lockup and the 3/4 (OD) shift. If you are lacking both, I'd first investigate a wiring problem. Harnesses can get burned, crimped or unplugged.... internal harnesses can suffer a problem too (the ones inside the pan). That would be a good place to start your investigation... the wiring harness.

all the fuses were checked. TPS was changed too. Fluid looked fine also. What is the max speed/rpm to drive without OD?

the explorer will run all day at 3000 rpm.... which is about 60-65 mph without OD

Thanks for the response. Am I doing any damage to the tranny or engine by running at 3000?

It does slip out when i let go of the gas and kicks (i mean kicks) back in when im on the gas again.

One thing i forgot to mention, there were wires that got burnt from the exhaust manifold on the right side of the motor and my mechanic supposedly fixed them.

I'd investigate that "fix"... could explain the lack of OD and lockup, as for the no 4x4 look into the shift motor rebuild thread in the stickies at the beginning of the forum.
