91 Explorer Sport Wont go into 4X4

The 4x4 has never worked in this ever since I've bought it. I push the 4x4 button and no light! I hear a series of clicks in the back but no lights. While driving down the road in 2WD the 4x4 light will randomly come on but still in 2WD. If anyone can give me some tips on whats wrong with it and how I can fix it, I would greatly appreciate it.

I would probably start with the shift motor. Very common problem.

Is there anyway you can rebuild the shift motor on these because I don't have the $200 to replace it right now!

go to a junkyard or salvage yard. check the front hubs and axles work your way from the small easy stuff up to the shift motor

I don't remember exactly where it's at here (maybe the useful threads forum "singleton" pages), but there are several discussions on rebuilding the shift motor. If you haven't yet tried to put shift motor or similar into this site's search engine, that's what I'd recommend.
