My 91 explorer makes a grinding noise when making a right hand turn and decelerating. As long as some gas is applied the noise is not there. I suspect a possible missing spacer in the driver side manual hub section as the grinding feels/sounds like it comes from the left front. Anyone familiar with this ?

is it definately grinding, cuz my 93 used to have a loud noise from the front when turning, and slowing down, but was more of a rubbing.
that turned out to be wheel bearings.
then later on i got a grinding noise when cranked fully left, and that was the auto hubs not disengaging.

Hubs are manual Warns. I suspect partially engaged 4wd, although could be bearings as suggested. 4wd does not work and am in the process of removing the transfer case motor.
