NO GO---After pressing hard enough to down shift at 40mph with the selector in OD the trans will not engage any gear unless I push in on the kick down cable manually. When I can get it to seleca a gear it seams to work OK if I do not select the OD position. If OD is selected there is a little indication of movement if on flat ground as the engine is reved. When I retunt to the P position, manually push on the kick down cable, then select R,1,2 or D, it will select the gear most of the time. Is there a quick fix or is something in the VB need attention. This is a one owner 173,000mi Explorer that was not driven hard, the previous said he probably didn't activate kick down more than 6 or 8 taimes in all the years he drove it.
I can usually fix most problems I just need guidance.....New owner HELP needed!!!!

Did you check to see if your cooler is clogged, or if your bands need adjusting? You do have a lot of miles, so it's hard to say if it needs some internal overhauling. You mentioned that the transmission shifts when you move the selector, but not from park. Sometimes the part of the valve body where the manual slide moves in, and out from could cause wear in the bore, and eventually cause hydraulic leakage.
