I've done some searching but can't seem to find it. For a couple weeks now I have to hold the key over for about a second (one thousand one) before the engine fires. And then I don't have warmup RPMs. It idles at 6 or 700 like it is already warm. Usually a quick turn of the key and it starts.

It runs great! Very smoothe with lots of power. 190K, new heads at 163K. Since my problem started I have replaced the plugs and cleaned the IAC and MAF. I don't get the CEL. Ran KOEO anyway, got 21, 24, 67. I cleared them and went for a 2 mile drive. KOEO was empty but Run was 13 &77.

I drive 2000 miles a month for work. I'd hate to get stuck somewhere in rural MN. Any ideas??

You may have a faulty IAC. Also, when you say slow to start do you mean it just takes awhile? In that case it's just called long-crank time. Slow to start is usually when the engine spins slow via bad battery.

KOER 77 is almost always operator error -- you missed the "goose" test at the appropriate time.

KOER 13 is usually more symptomatic than diagnostic. It basically means the engine was running a little rough during the test.

My first thought on this kind of complaint is fuel pressure/fuel delivery. Is your fuel filter due to be replaced?

Long crank time is a better description of what I have. Last week I stalled it backing out of a parking space. It took nearly a minute of combined crank time to start.

Fuel pump was new about 10K ago. Fuel filter has probably 85K on it. I don't know how often to change it.

My truck does this all the time...

Saves on gas, why bother fixing it? lol.

85K on a fuel filter

...yes that's bad - change it soon

Long Cranktime Cured Now Fuel Pumps Noise

I've been without on-line access  I replaced the fuel filter last week. By the time I did it though the long crank time had resolved itself.

But yesterday the fuel pump made a god-awful growlling noise when I cranked the engine. It sputtered to life like an old lawn mower when I pumped the pedal. There was the normal high pitched whine for a couple seconds and this hollow growl sound that lasted for a couple seconds after I shut it off (which was right away.) When I tried it again a few minutes later everything was normal.

Thought I only had about 12K on the fuel pump. It is a year old so probably closer to 20K. I got it from FordParts.com and had Car-X put it in. The tank was full. Is my FP going?? and if so will it crapout while I am driving or wait for a startup?

Well, your fuel pump could be going, but with only 12,000 miles on it, that would be a bad deal. I assume you've checked for vac leaks everywhere, checked your IAC, checked for proper positioning of the Throttle Position Sensor, changed your air filter, changed your fuel filter, have reasonably good plugs and wires in there, and checked fuel pressure at the rail.

Lets close this thread out.
I've put about 600 miles on it since that strange noise, and everything is working great. My last fillup show not my usual 17mpg, but 18.4. Guess I'll have to change that fuel filter more often. Thanks for the help!
