Hey everyone! Kevin from Matoaca, VA here...that's a few miles upriver from Petersburg.
I have a 91 XLT with 198,142 miles and counting. I think I've driven it for at least 20 of its 27 years. It's been a workhorse, that's for sure, and I haven't exactly been easy on it over the years. But it's been very sound mechanically, for the most part, and I'd like to see just how long I can keep her going.
Right now, it needs an AC compressor, could definitely use a tune up, the thermostat could use replacing but hasn't been a major issue so far, it's got a slight oil leak (I have to put about a half a quart in it every 2-3 weeks) and it's developed a transmission leak lately. Everything else is basically cosmetic...might want to replace the center console (the arm rest broke off some years back), the handle on the passenger's door panel that you shut the door with (not exactly sure what that's called) broke off (that was a drunk band mate), the radio and cigarette lighter don't work. Makes for a quiet ride with a dead phone battery.
But she keeps soldiering on...been my daily driver for a long time, and hauls me and my band gear to every gig within a 25 mile radius of Richmond every week.
I'd like to see just how long I can keep her on the road. I want to try and do as much of the work myself as I can. I know that there are some things I can't do (the transmission will have to be rebuilt/replaced eventually), but everything I can get to, I'll save the money and do myself. I've browsed this thread before, and found it helpful, so I decided to join up.
Thanks for reading!
Kevin
