hey guys spring is here, and summer is right around the corner which means rollin with the sound system.
however i do believe my exploder is in dire need of a new alternator, the tested 67 amps it puts out now isn't going to be enough. I am probably going to purchase a 200amp one from mralternator.com, since its only 225, and autozone wants 105 for a 95 amp one.
my question is how easy is it going to be to change the alternator? any speical tools? estimate on how long it will take? it looks like the biggest problem will be getting the belt off that the alternator has on it. any info will help me out.
thanks
ryan

do a search under my name and you can see where I just replaced my alt and tensioner. Doesn't take long at all. I am no mec by any means ans when I do something I do it REAL slow to not break anything. Mabye 20 min for just the alt and 40 min for both. Again I go real slow. I have a 94 so it should be real similar. Questions just ask.

Early X's are the same. I forgot, but it's either 3 or 4 bolts holding the alternator down, one wire is screwed to the alternator and the other is a pop plug... just remove the belt by relieving the pressure on the tensioner and then whala... replace the alternator.

I've changed my ex's alternator so many times I can easily do it by myself in under an hour.

It's 3 bolts, the stator wire, charging wire, and a 3 wire connection... All are used with the replacement from mralternator. I just got a 200 amp from mralternator and now I love it, but at first I had a lot of problems with it... The alt they send you will have a much smaller pulley, so the belt will be looser and slip on the pulley, causing the alternator to not produce its full 14.5 volts. (At least, this is my experience - it put out about 10.5 volts). I couldn't find a smaller belt that was still large enough to fit, so I ended up buying longer bolts and 3/8" tall spacers to place between the alt and it's mounting bracket, which then tightened the belt, fixing the problems. Now it's great! I can turn everything on and sit at a stoplight, and where the voltage gauge used to fall to the M on NORMAL, now it only falls from the top of the L to between the A and the L. :D

has anyone eles had this problem with the mralternator.com alternators and the belts???

thats not cool, then its not a bolt on app. its a gotta do modifying app. and that sucks

thanks

I am not sure... My tensioner was out all the way and the belt was still not tight enough... At first I thought the problem was the voltage regulator, but I got it checked and it was working fine... I figured that the belt could be the only problem... True, I had to spend like $7 at the hardware store for the spacers and longer bolts, but I am happy with the result. I just wish mralternator would let people know that this can happen when they buy an alt from them... This may not be a problem with all years and models (Mine's a '94 with AC), and maybe you can find a better size belt somewhere... But if your experience is anything like mine, straight from mralternator.com, the alt will not seem to work right and you will have one obnoxiously loud squealing belt.
