I have a blown stock JBL sub in my 92 EB that I want to replace without customizing anything. What size speaker is this. Any one know of any good deals for this on the internet somewhere? or any ideas to get the most bang for my bucks? Can I just put a regular speaker in or will i not be satisfied with a regular speaker? I do like bass.
Thanks,
JB
Thanks

You need to replace the sub with another sub, not just a speaker. Pretty sure the factory sub is an 8" sub. If you want to upgrade I have a 10" MTX sub in a stealth box with an amp. It fits in the factory location. I'll double check, but I'm pretty sure it fits all years. They sell new for $450, hows $200 sound? I had it in my truck just over a year. Just got 2 12s so I dont need it anymore. I have the wiring harness, all screws and the mesh cover.

Thank you for the offer but I was hoping to get something for under $100.00. I'm pretty sure that the amp in it is OK all I need is the speaker. I was just wondering if anyone here knew of any place that I can get a replacement speaker other than the Ford dealer.

go to any audio shop and buy an 8" sub. My aunts blew in her Expedition, replaced ith with a JL 8W0. Might as well just get a low part of the line replacement sub though. That amp wont have enough to power to push a decent sub. Just so you dont try to buy a real nice sub, because it would be wasting money.

i replaced mine...bought the factory sub brand new from a ford dealer for like $80 ...i think its more like a 6 1/2" sub

It's 6 1/2". '98-newer Explorers have 8" subs.

I had this problem with my '94 earlier this year. I learned after I threw in an amp and a 12" sub that you can, in fact, buy the replacement speaker from the dealership. It is $82.00 (here in Chicago). Radio Shack also makes a 6.5" sub speaker that will fit in the enclosure as well. That speaker is about $20.00.

In order to open the enclosure, you have to take that whole panel off. You'll need a large torx bit to remove the seat belt bolt. I think it is either a size 48 or 50 (I don't have the bit handy). Make sure that you replace the stick "caulk" that they used to seal it when putting everything back together.

Good Luck.

Dave

you don't need to take the whole panel off..just the grill and you need a star shape screwdriver to take off the bolts...you have to squeeze the sides of the grill and pull out

id92 is right. If you're only replacing the sub speaker, all you have to do is to take the grill off, and use the star shaped screwdriver and unscrew the 4 screws at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock position then pull the speaker out.

Well I tried taking off just the grill and I started breaking of the plastic pieces that holds the grill in so I stopped. What's the trick in taking off just the grill with out breaking off the tabs? Do you know if Radio Shack's sub is at least the same quality as the stock? What's the amp rating in the stock sub?
Thanks for all the help.

No no no no no!!! Not the trim. Just the metal grill itself. Insert a flat head screwdriver in the top of the METAL grill then pull out. There're no plastic panels to take off.

i know for sure there are tabs on the left and bottom of the grill and either the right or top..i forgot...just push the bottom of the grill up and the left side to the right and it should just pop out.

I think the factory amp is rated at like 85 watts max. At least thats what I recall.

The whole system is rated at 290 peak watts or 145 RMS watts. The speakers amp is rated at 1x30 peak watts or 1x15 RMS watts. The subwoofer amp is rated at 170 peak watts or 85 RMS watts.

Excellent! I have a better understanding of the grill now, thanks to your replies, and I'll take another look at it when I get home tonight. I'll let you know how it goes. Now that I know what the speaker and system is rated at, I think I'll do some shopping around this weekend.

OK I got just the metal grill out, thanks for the tips. The speaker has 4 torx screws holdind it, luckily I had a set of torx bits. Now I have to repair the plastic trim around the grill from pulling on it before I knew that you can just take the metal grill out. :-( Oh well, live and learn! I check Radio Shack and they do have a 6 1/2" woofer but it's only 40 watt RMS. They did have an 8" that was 100 watt RMS but that would require cutting a bigger hole in the amp box. 6 1/2" sub woofer at 80 watts is hard to find. Still shopping around :-) I will let you all know what I come up with.

bilden,

I had my sub go out on my 94 and replaced it with this Pyramid Subwoofer. I know people say they arent very good but i was really surprised it sounds really good. Here is the link to the place i got it. I actually got mine from them on ebay but you can get it for cheaper and less shipping on their site. Also, www.jcwhitney.com has another pyramid for 14.95 that is 200 watts max and may sound better since the stock amp is not that powerful.

Thanks, that's definitely the best deal I've seen so far. I just got done ordering the 6 1/2" Pyramid woofer today. Can't wait to get it so I can hear some bass again.
I appreciate the help.

I'm not too familiar with the sound system in my 92 EB, do they all have a sub in them? And if so, where is it located??

The mods to put an 8" sub in are minimal and can be done with any half-decent rotary toolkit that has (preferrably) a blade, or at the very least a tapered-edge grinder bit. All you have to do is remove the ring that the factory sub screws into and cut out the piece in the center of the inside that looks like a backing for the speaker (it's a circle with "rays" coming out of it that's higher than the normal reinforcement strips on the inside)
