I have a 98 eb explorer with the mach stereo system w/6 cd changer n sub in far rear storage area. the speaker cracked and the factory wants $313 to replace it. I went by a car audio shop and they said it was an odd size n to buy it from ford. I don't need the amp which should be included just the speaker. Does anyone know what size a replacement would be and where it could be purchased?(besides ford) Or maybe a recommendation of another sub as good or better to replace it. I think the factory sub rocked but...
Thanks

Jl 8w0

I just asked the same question and nobody answered. I did a search and came across your post. I when to tweeter yesterday and picked up a JL 8W0. It is rated at 75 watts and 4ohms. The factory amp is rated at 85watts at 4ohms. The salesman there had seen this before and new just what to do. The mounting holes are correct but the depth of the JL is about a 1/4 inch deeper. The salesman was nice enough to make a 1/2 inch spacer and mounted it into my stock box. It worked fine. JL does make an 8" that is that has the same mounting hole, but is even deeper and would need a larger spacer. It is rated at 125watts and 4ohms. It is another choice but I don't Know if the 85 watt amp would do it any justice.

I hope this helps,
Rob..

Oh ya, I didn't reuse the foam cushion mounted on the front of the stock speaker.

wow i did the exact same thing, jl 8w0, but i used like rubber tree ties to space mine, its works, now im wondering, is the stock amp 85W RMS, or is it peak power, because if its peak then its really only puttingout like 40 watts, which isnt enough, plus the box is prolly too big fo rthe JL they like small s

I have the same problem with a blown stock subwoofer. It happened a few months ago but I've been too busy/lazy to seek any help until today. I just got back from a local car audio place and they said it was a common problem for Explorers/Expeditions (as well as Suburbans, etc). It is an 8" speaker but that's the extent of my knowledge. I didn't bother going to the dealer because I know their price will be too much.

He quoted me around $80 for a new speaker but suggested that I get a new speaker and a separate amp for the subwoofer, which would run me $300, or to upgrade the stock front four speakers and disconnect the sub completely which would be $230.

I think I will just get a new speaker put in as the stock one lasted me over 5 years, I don't see myself having the car long enough to justify the amp.

I installed a Infinity Kappa series 8" in my stock enclosure. Fit perfect, no spacer needed
