any tips to get an oxygen sensor out? especially when it seems like it has been there a while?

Look through the wheel well and disconnect the o2 sensor from the clip. the drivers side should be fairly easy (i just used a large open adjustable wrench). The Sensors are installed with an anti seize compound on the threads so they shouldn't be as hard as they first look. You will need to either buy or rent (autozone) an 02 socket for the passenger side. This tool makes the job a snap. O2 Socket

I put on a little liquid wrench the night before. I thin it helped. The sensors came out easily.

Just did all 3 on a 96 with lotsa miles. Soaked with Liquid wrench the night before, in the morning, started and left it run for about 3 minutes to warm up the exhaust manifolds and the pipe threads. The heat will expand the threads and help release the sensor. Used a 7/8 open end to loosen them all, not too tough. BE CAREFULL of the HOT metal!!
