I have a 1992 Eddie Bauer Explorer 4x4 w/V6 automatic. It drives okay with a little "clunk" when I first put it in drive but after about 30 miles, it starts leaking fluid from the front of the tranny where the bell housing bolts up to the motor. I have had the truck for the last 6 years and it has been sitting most of that time. I drive it about once every 2 or 3 months. The fluid is dark brown. Any idea on what is causing the leak and is there anything I can do to stop it? I am trying to sell the truck but I don't want to sell it to someone if the tranny is going to go out nor do I want to put a lot of money into it just to get rid of it since they are not worth much anyway. Would a trans fluid cooler help?

Sounds like you need a new front seal, new fluid, and definitely a cooler.

If it's leaking oil ,and it's noticeable, it sounds like the tranny is about to go. Mine did the exact same thing for a whiel before it just died all together.

The fluid should be a nice red color, not brown.

Try an auxillary tranny cooler and maybe an Auxillary 12 VDC fan. This may be cheaper than a new tranny. It also sounds like its time to replace the fluid.

I had a similar problem while towing and these accessories have eliminated the problem.

Good luck! :salute:
