Trasmission is slipping - overheated last night and some ATF ran out near the pan somewhere...

NEW INFO:

I did some more troubleshooting today on the issue - no engagement in forward or reverse in any gear, also no change for 4x4. If I increase RPMs to ~2000-2500 it will engage in both forward and reverse gears.

I checked the fluid level and it was a bit low. I added some fluid, but no change. I'm not sure if I'm getting a good level reding since I can't drive it, using the two holes as the guideline since it's cold. The level is a little streaky, so I'm not sure where the exact point is.

New info added... TIA

Problem solved! I decided to drop the pan and do a filter change and flush. I was expecting the usual 3-4 QTs of fluid to drop out of the pan - no more than 1/2 QT was in the pan  I went through about 12 QTs on the flush and starting checking the level. Took another 3 QTs or so and the level came into line and it's running fine now.

My theory is that when I was driving with the parking brake engaged, the tranny got hot and lost a bunch of fluid from the seals as I was driving. Eventually there wasn't enough to get the job done. This is the only thing I can think of since there have been no leaks and I checked the vacuum lines and they're dry.
