So after lengthy research I have figured out that my 92 Explorer has "lifter tick/noise". In order to make a correct/complete repair I would need to pretty much disassemble most of the internal the engine. Clean the engine of grime and sludge build up and reassemble with new parts. While I am disassembling I will probably replace old parts and bring the current R-12 AC system up to retrofit for the R-134a system in which you can readily purchase at any auto part store.
I expect a project like this might take some time (couple of weekends) as I am in no way a mechanic but I feel like I can make these repair without visiting a qualified mechanic charging me out of the this world to do the same job. I will reply back as I begin making these repairs and letting you all know how I am doing. I would rather make this repair than buy a new/used Explorer. Please, if you have any suggestions/tips/comments please feel free to leave a reply. Thanks.

just remember that lifters are kinda pricey ( $30-50 a pop...depends on manufacture ) also when the lower intake manifold comes off and you start to clean any sludge out of the upper part of the block ...try not to dislodge to much crud into the the block ....to much material that falls into the block can cause problems with your oil system ,like the pump's pick up screen .

i would use a decent shop vac to help with the removel of debrie from clean up .

also when you have the upper components of the engine off i would take the upper intake plenum ( the big silver tube that your air filter tube connects to ) and the lower intake manifold and soak them in gas over night and then take a round nylon toliet bowl brush ( works best on the upper intake ) and clean the parts ....did that to mine when i had mine apart .

good luck

let me know if theres a way to decompress the AC system at home. i have a bad line that needs to be disconnected and iwant to do it at home than pay some half @ass mechanic to refill my 134A and play with my fuse box like they did already.

Many places will take your old stuff out for free.. they recycle it and sell it back out.

You can buy your own evacuation pump, manifold set and r-134.. Then once you have the parts you can repair/charge your own a/c systems..

kool will check it out. i also want to know how the lifter job goes make a write up please. i think my engine may need it soon

I once installed a complete set of lifters in a 92 Ex only to find the noise still there after start up. After doing some research I was told to check out the rockerarms as they are known to wear in the pushrod socket causing lifter rattle.Long story short I replaced the rocker arm assembly's " noise gone" problem solved. the rocker assy.s are cheaper than the lifters and much easier to replace. OOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRR.... You can be stupid cool like me my first time and wrap a towel around a small screwdriver, hold your breath, close your eyes, and stick it in the relief valve.:D

Disclaimer: I DO NOT recommend being as stupid as I once was.:thumbdwn:

yea.. that will work too.. I've also done the work without pulling the a/c system out of opening it up. That is, I've replaced the heads, which is what you are basically doing when you change the lifters...

As mentioned above, I'd problably try changing the rocker arm assembly and push rods before I went after the lifters.

I just happen to run across the receipt from when I bought my Del-F40KIT from Delta Camsshaft. Total price including shipping was $231 back in July of 07.
