02 4.0 the sound is coming from the driver side. i dont know if its lifter needs to be adjusted or its the timing chain. you can hear a rattel noise on the top of the motor..... is it easy to adjust the lash on the lifter?

so then it must be the timing chain?

engine flush?

Depending on which engine type you might have a sticking valve, a clogged valve lifter or lash adjuster. An easy and inexpensive thing to try is an engine flush at your next oil change. I use Gunk's product. I warm up the engine, add the flush, and idle the engine in Park for 5 minutes, then replace the oil and the filter.

If you've ever heard timing chain rattle it is usually easy to distinguish the sound from valve train noise localized to one cylinder. If the noise sounds like marbles rattling around in the engine then it is probably timing chain rattle. 2000 Ford Explorer Sport - Engine Noise
